LA CROSSE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team (16-15, 7-13 WIAC) was swept in a midweek conference doubleheader by UW-La Crosse (24-8, 15-5 WIAC) on Wednesday afternoon from Copeland Park. The Eagles won game one 15-2 in seven innings before jumping in front early and taking game two 14-7.
Game One
The Eagles scored four times in the bottom of the first inning, all coming with two outs and capped by a two-run homer. The lead grew with single runs in the second and fourth frames until sophomore
Anthony Massa connected on a two-run blast to cut the Pioneers deficit to 6-2 in the fifth.
It was all UW-La Crosse the rest of the way however, with four runs in the bottom of the fifth and five more in the sixth to put the game away 15-2 in seven innings.
Massa provided most of the UW-Platteville offense in game one, finishing 3-for-4 with two RBI and his 14th home run of the season. The team's other three hits came from junior
Caleb Parker, senior
Mason Molitor, and freshman
Brayden Knoll.
Senior
Pierce Nelson dropped to 2-3 after suffering the loss on the mound. He allowed five runs across his lone inning of work.
Game Two
Another big first inning allowed the Eagles to jump out to a 6-0 advantage, highlighted by a three-run home run. Senior
Mason Molitor got on back for the Pioneers with an RBI double in the second, but UW-La Crosse tacked on four more runs in the second inning to make it 10-1.
Parker roped a bases clearing double to cut the deficit to 10-4 in the fourth inning and added an RBI single in the sixth to make it a five-run game, but the Eagles countered with a grand slam in the seventh inning to make it 14-5.
UW-Platteville closed out the scoring with two runs in the ninth inning, with Knoll on an error and freshman
Kaleb Elwood bringing in Molitor with an infield single.
The Pioneers outhit the Eagles 14-9, with three-hit games for Elwood, Parker, and Molitor leading the way. Parker drove in a team-high four runs, while two of Molitor's hits were doubles. Eight of UW-Platteville's nine starters got a hit in the contest.
On the mound, freshman
Cade Voelker was dealt his first loss of the season after allowing four runs across 0.2 innings. In relief, freshman
Carver Kamentz, sophomore
Brayden Schimmel, and sophomore
Logan Kottmeyer combined to throw five scoreless innings. Kamentz struck out four across his 2.1 frames.
