LA CROSSE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team split Tuesday's doubleheader with UW-La Crosse at the North Campus Field. The Eagles (17-11, 2-3 WIAC) took game one 7-1 before the Pioneers (18-10, 4-1 WIAC) answered with a 13-2 five-inning victory.
UW-Platteville had a strong day at the plate, stacking a 24-9 advantage in hits while both teams committed three errors across both games.
Game 1
The Eagles got into scoring position early and scored four runs in the first inning. Even though the Pioneers would dish out 10 hits across seven innings, it would take the second-to last at-bat of the game for UW-Platteville to get on board.
Senior
Carlie Jo Brownlee entered the game after the first four runs and tallied eight strikeouts while walking seven and allowing two hits and three runs.
Game 2
The Eagles once again got on the board first and early in the second game, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first frame. The Pioneers then turned up the heat in the third inning when senior
Greta Volkening led off the inning with a single to right field and scored when senior
Melissa Dietz singled to right field. Junior
Rylee Broshous then doubled to drive in the tying run, but the Pioneers did not stop there and took a 5-2 lead before the end of the inning.
It looked as if the Eagles might tie the game in the bottom of the third, but UW-Platteville left three Eagles stranded on base to maintain the lead.
Volkening led off the fourth inning with a double and it set the tone for the Pioneers to score four runs on four hits. UW-Platteville would double down and score another four runs on four hits in the fifth inning, with the last two scoring on a home run by Broshous.
Volkening finished the game 3-for-3 while Broshous was 3-for-4 with four RBI.
Freshmen
Payton Gile and
Nora Buske (W, 6-2) joined forces in the circle. Gile started the game and struck out one while walking two and surrendering three hits and two runs. Buske captured the win and struck out one while walking three and allowing just one hit in three and a third innings.
The Pioneers will return to action on Saturday, April 25 when they travel to UW-Stevens Point for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
