WHITEWATER, Wis. – Sophomore
Anthony Massa homered three times as the University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team (15-7, 6-5 WIAC) beat UW-Oshkosh (8-14, 4-7 WIAC) 11-4 in game one of Sunday's doubleheader at Prucha Field in Whitewater. Game two was postponed in the third inning and will resume tomorrow with the Pioneers trailing 5-1.
Game One
After a leadoff single by junior
Caleb Parker, sophomore
Anthony Massa hit his first home run of the day, a two-run shot on the first pitch of the at bat to give the Pioneers a 2-0 advantage.
The Titans tied the game with a two-run homer in the second and later took the lead in the fifth with another two-run blast in the top of the fifth. UW-Platteville answered with a five-run fifth inning, with the first two runs of the frame coming on a two-run double by freshman
Kaleb Elwood. Massa then launched his second home run of the game to make it 6-4, and freshman
Brayden Knoll clobbered a solo homer to make it a three-run game.
Massa and Knoll each homered again in the sixth inning to make it 11-4. With his third blast of the game, Massa matched the Pioneers single game record for home runs, and his 11 on the season also tied the program mark.
The score remained 11-4 for the remainder of the contest, as sophomore
Brayden Schimmel and senior
Wyatt Fischer combined to hold the Titans scoreless across the final four innings.
Senior
Jordan Stanton improved to 4-2 on the season after tossing the first five innings of the game and allowing four runs while striking out four. Schimmel tallied five strikeouts across his three frames, while Fischer worked around a pair of baserunners for a scoreless ninth.
Massa finished 3-for-4 with three home runs, six RBI, and three runs scored to lead the Pioneers, who totaled 16 hits as a team. Elwood and Knoll each recorded a trio of hits as well, while Parker and junior
Evan Bohr had two apiece.
Game Two
In game two, UW-Oshkosh loaded the bases and pushed across four runs in the top of the first inning. The Titans scored another in the second to increase the lead to five, but the Pioneers got one back in the bottom half of the inning thanks to an RBI single by Parker.
UW-Platteville loaded the bases with two outs in the third inning before the game was stopped due to lightning. The game was postponed and will resume tomorrow at 11 a.m. in the bottom of the third with the Pioneers up to bat.

The Pioneers will conclude today's second game tomorrow starting at 11 a.m. in Whitewater. After that, UW-Platteville and UW-Oshkosh will play the final two games of the four-game series.
