Pioneers Wrap Up Spring Break Trip with Pair of Wins

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team concluded its Spring Break trip in Florida with two wins on Friday. The Pioneers (11-6) defeated Endicott (5-6) and SUNY Brockport (2-6), both by scores of 7-4.

Game One
In the first game against Endicott, junior Peyton Murphy scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the second inning and the score would remain 1-0 up until the fifth inning. Endicott tied the game on a passed ball, but the Pioneers quickly regained the lead in the bottom of the inning, scoring five runs. Junior Allison Peters' single up the middle drove in one run, a home run by senior Melissa Dietz added three runs, and then a ground out to third base gave UW-Platteville a 6-1 advantage.

The Pioneers added one more run in the sixth inning and Endicott's attempt at a comeback got cut short at three runs in the top of the seventh.

Peters finished the game 3-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored while Dietz paced the team with three RBI.

Freshman Payton Gile (2-0) captured the win, striking out four, walking one and allowing four hits and one run in four innings pitched.

Game Two
UW-Platteville rolled to another 7-4 win against SUNY Brockport, this time spreading the seven runs scored across the first four innings. Murphy's RBI double in the first inning put he Pioneers on the board and freshman Delila Liston's RBI single in the second inning double the lead. Murphy added another RBI to her stat sheet in the third inning and junior Mia Savage's single to center field scored the Pioneers' fourth run of the game.

The Golden Eagles then cut that advantage in half in the bottom of the third inning. However, the Pioneers quickly added three more runs to the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning behind a two-RBI double by Peters and a single by Murphy. Brockport added one run in the fourth and one in the fifth, but three straight strikeouts in the sixth quickly quieted Brockport's hope of a comeback.

Murphy finished the game 3-for-4 with three RBI while Peters finished 2-for-3 and two RBI.

In the circle, three Pioneers tallied four or more strikeouts to secure the win. Freshman Avery Lundblad pitched the first three innings and tallied five strikeouts and one walk while surrendering three hits and two runs. Freshman Nora Buske pitched the next two innings, striking out four, walking two and allowing two hits and runs. Senior Carlie Jo Brownlee finished the day in the circle and allowed one walk and one hit while striking our four in two innings pitched.

The Pioneers will return to action on Saturday, March 28 when they take on Ripon College in a home opener doubleheader on Senior Day. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
