KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team (9-6) bounced back with a pair of shutout wins on Thursday, blanking Bates (3-3) 3-0 to begin the morning before taking down Ithaca (4-3) 6-0 to conclude the day in Kissimmee, Florida.
Game One
After a leadoff single by junior
Rylee Broshous in the second, junior
Peyton Murphy ripped a double that put the Pioneers on the board first. Murphy took advantage of a Bobcats throwing error later in the inning to cross the plate following a bunt by senior
Calli Storms.
Junior
Allison Peters led off with a double in the third, and pinch runner
Lauren Salerno came in to score on an RBI single by sophomore
Delaney Johnson. That run would be the final score of the game as UW-Platteville's pitching held Bates scoreless.
Freshman
Payton Gile earned the win and threw 4.2 shutout innings while striking out four and working around five hits and four walks. Freshman
Nora Buske collected the save in relief, allowing two hits across the final 2.1 innings.
Murphy went 3-for-3 for the Pioneers, who totaled 10 hits as a team in the victory. Storms and Peters also had multi-hit games, with each recording a double.
Game Two
Following three scoreless innings against Ithaca, UW-Platteville broke through in the top of the fourth on an RBI single by junior
Mia Savage.
The score remained 1-0 until the top of the seventh when the Pioneers put five on the board to get a six-run cushion. Freshman
Delila Liston brought in the first run of the inning with a single to left, before Peters tallied her third hit of the game to drive in Liston and freshman
Kaia McVay. Sophomore
Delaney Johnson brought home Peters with a single, and freshman
Tessa Britt capped the scoring with an single down the line.
Junior
Avery Lundblad and Buske combined to throw another seven shutout innings for the Pioneers. Lundblad earned the win, her first on the season, while holding Ithaca to just two hits and two walks across her five innings. Buske picked up her second save of the day after tossing the final two frames and striking out three.
UW-Platteville finished with nine hits, three of which came from Peters. Liston added two hits, and the Pioneers were active on the basepaths with five stolen bases in the win.
