PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's basketball team (17-8, 9-5 WIAC) recognized its senior class of Joey Furehmann,
Miles Hettinger,
Aiden Wieczorek, and
Max Love on Saturday evening and celebrated a 74-47 win over UW-Stout (9-16, 5-9 WIAC) on Bo Ryan Court after a 30-point Pioneers run put the home team ahead for good.
Four Pioneers finished in double figures, with Fuhremann scoring a game-high 23 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including 13-of-17 from the free throw line. Wieczorek added 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting, while junior
Bristol Lewis (11 points) and Love (10) also reached double digits.
It was a closely contested first half with eight lead changes and the largest lead for either side being just five points. That five-point advantage came thanks to a free throw make by Fuhremann with 3:16 until the break that put the Pioneers ahead 30-25. UW-Stout rattled off the next seven points to take the lead, but Lewis knocked down a pair of free throws with five seconds left to send the game into halftime even at 32.
Those free throws kickstarted what would be a 30-point UW-Platteville run that spanned the first 10 minutes of the second half. Love scored the Pioneers first five points of the half before a pair of three pointers by Wieczorek helped the lead reach 15. Junior
Max Lucey sunk a three of his own and Love capped the run with a layup before UW-Stout scored its first points of the half with 9:59 remaining to make it 60-35. Across that run, UW-Platteville's defense forced eight Blue Devils turnovers and turned those into 14 points.
The lead grew to a game-high 30 in the closing minutes on a free throw by freshman
Cooper Hoffman. Fuhremann and sophomore
Cameron Morel concluded the scoring for the Pioneers in the 74-47 win.
UW-Platteville shot 49.0 percent (25-of-51) from the floor but just 29.4 percent (5-of-17) from three-point range. UW-Platteville was able to get to the free throw line consistently, finishing 76.0 percent (19-of-25). The Pioneers shot the ball very well in the second half at 55.6 percent (15-of-27).
For the Blue Devils, Domanyck Schwarzenberger scored a team-high 13 points. UW-Stout shot 33.3 percent (16-of-48) in the contest and 28.6 percent (6-of-21) from beyond the arc.
The Pioneers will host UW-Oshkosh in the opening round of the WIAC Tournament on Tuesday night. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
