Hot Bats Propel Pioneers Over Blue Jays

FULTON, Mo. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team (2-1) scored 11 runs in the final three innings to defeat Westminster (0-3) 11-7 on Friday afternoon.

It wasn't until the fifth inning when junior Mia Savage's three-run shot to left center put the first runs of the game on the board. The Pioneers added one more run in the fifth before Westminster went three and out in the bottom of the inning. UW-Platteville doubled its lead in the top of the sixth behind freshman Tessa Britt's first career home run, which scored three runs after senior Greta Volkening scored one run.

Trailing 8-0 to the Pioneers, Westminster scored four unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth to keep things interesting. However, three more runs by UW-Platteville, including a two-run homer from junior Allison Peters, gave the Pioneers a huge cushion of 11-4 going into the bottom of the seventh. The Blue Jays scored three runs on a home run of their own, but it was not enough for a comeback.

As a team, the Pioneers put up 15 hits to Westminster's 8, and totaled three home runs, two doubles, and committed just one error.

Freshman shortstop Delila Liston had a banner day, finishing 4-for-4. Peters finished 3-for-4 at the plate and added two RBI. Senior Melissa Dietz was perfect once again, going 2-for-2 while being walked three times. Britt had a great day, finishing 2-for-4 and adding three RBI while Savage paced the team with four RBI.

Senior Carlie Jo Brownlee (W, 1-1) captured the win and pitched 2.2 innings of relief, striking out four, walking one and allowing three hits and four runs. Brownlee took over for sophomore Bentley Cutts who pitched the first three innings and struck out three, walked four and allowed just one hit.

The Pioneers' pitching staff totaled 10 strikeouts in the game while the Blue Jay's only struck out one Pioneer as a team.

UW-Platteville will hit the road on Saturday, Feb. 28 when they face off against Carleton College at 1 p.m.
