IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team faced the University of Iowa in an exhibition game on Tuesday afternoon, with the Hawkeyes coming away with a 34-5 home win from Duane Banks Field.
The contest was UW-Platteville's first exhibition game against a Division I opponent since 2008, when the Pioneers traveled to Waterloo to play Northern Iowa.
Graduate student
Isaac Bixby got the start for the Pioneers and allowed two runs in the first inning before tossing a scoreless second frame. Bixby struck out one and forced three groundouts across his two innings.
UW-Platteville got on the board with three runs in the top half of the seventh, as junior
Caleb Parker opened the scoring with a bases loaded walk to score senior
Mason Molitor. Sophomore
Anthony Massa drove in another with a sacrifice fly, and sophomore
Trinity Beland scored on a wild pitch.
In the eighth, Parker ripped a single to center field to drive in Molitor for his second RBI of the game. Freshman
Ethan Birkel capped the scoring for the Pioneers with an RBI single to left field that allowed Beland to cross the plate.
Molitor reached base four times with three hits and a walk while scoring twice. Beland added a pair of hits, while Parker, Birkel, junior
Connor Gresens, junior
Tarron Bockhop, and sophomore
Xander Martinez all had one.
The Pioneers will use the exhibition to prepare for the upcoming season opener against Elmhurst next Friday, February 27 in Rantoul, Illinois. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
