No. 17 Pioneers Fall to Falcons in Overtime

RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's basketball team (17-6, 7-5 WIAC) fell 69-65 in overtime on Saturday at UW-River Falls (14-9, 7-5 WIAC) in Page Arena.

The entire game was back and forth, featuring nine lead changes and 10 tied scores. Both teams shot the ball well in the first half, with the Pioneers shooting 46.4 percent (13-of-28) from the floor, with 6-of-11 (54.5 percent) shots in three-point range.

Both teams then went on to shoot 29.6 percent in the second half. The Falcons led 60-55 with 2:05 remaining in regulation, but a jump shot and two made free throws by senior Ella Mackiewicz cut UW-River Falls' lead to one before sophomore Ava Hanson split her pair of free throw attempts with 0:26 on the clock to tie the game 60-60. The Falcons called timeout and went for three points, but a miss and defensive rebound by Hanson followed by a missed buzzer beater sent the game to overtime.

The Falcons scored first, but then three free throws and a layup by Mackiewicz gave UW-Platteville a three-point lead with 2:36 to go in overtime. The Falcons called for a timeout and after the stoppage of play, the final seven points scored all came from free throws made by UW-River Falls.


Mackiewicz scored a team-high 15 points, and tied with senior Ashley Weir for a game-high seven rebounds.
Overall, the Pioneers shot 36.1 percent (22-of-61) from the field, including 35 percent (7-of-20) from beyond the arc. At the line, the Pioneers were 63.6 percent (14-of-22).

The Falcons finished the game shooting 35.8 percent (19-of-53) from the floor and 38.1 percent (8-of-21) from three-point territory. UW-River Falls finished 69.7 percent (23-of-33) from the foul line.

The Pioneers will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. for the Breast Cancer Awareness Game against UW-Eau Claire.
