LAKE GENEVA, Wis. – A first half goal was all the University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's soccer team needed (6-3-3, 2-0-0 WIAC) to beat UW-Whitewater (8-3-2, 0-1-1 WIAC) in a 1-0 game on Wednesday night at Badger High School in Lake Geneva.
The lone goal of the match was scored in the 29th minute, as sophomore
Mira Petri tallied her fourth of the season. Senior
Elise Kukuck collected her second assist of the year after her free kick found Petri for a header behind the Warhawks defense.
As the first half wound down, the Pioneers attempted a pair of shots on goal by Kukuck and freshman
Morgan Hospodarsky but were unable to add to the lead. UW-Whitewater turned up the attack in the second half, attempting six shots, four of which were on goal. Senior goalkeeper
Marguerite Mueller stopped all four, helping preserve UW-Platteville's second consecutive shutout.
In total, the Pioneers held a 13-11 advantage in shots, including 7-6 in shots on target. Petri had a team-high four shot attempts, while senior
Sarah Liljestrand added three. Kukuck put both of her shots on goal.
Mueller finished with six saves and has reached at least five saves in four of the past five matches. The shutout was her fifth on the season and third in the past four contests.
UW-Platteville continues conference play at home on Saturday night against UW-River Falls. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
