EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – Riding a seven-game win streak into the game, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's basketball team (12-1, 2-0) snapped No. 24 ranked UW-Eau Claire's (11-2, 1-1) 10-game win streak with a thrilling 59-55 win inside the Sonnentag Event Center Wednesday night.
Senior
Ashley Weir paced the team with 12 points and eight rebounds while sophomore
Ava Hanson added 11 points behind 3-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc and a pair of clutch free throws in the final seconds. In all, the Pioneers' nine three-pointers proved to be the difference in the closely contested conference matchup.
Out of the gates, UW-Platteville shut down the Blugolds' offense and built to their largest lead of the night,16-2, with 2:09 left in the first quarter. The Pioneers went on to never trail in the contest and have not trailed in a game since starting the conference portion of their schedule.
UW-Platteville led by double-digits for most of the game until the Blugolds found a rhythm at the start of the third quarter. A 7-0 run at start of the half cut the Pioneers' lead to three and soon the game was tied 41-41, but timely three pointers by Weir and Hanson put the Pioneers back ahead, 47-43 at the quarter break. The teams traded baskets down the stretch and UW-Platteville held on to a slim 56-55 lead with 1:20 on the clock until a free throw by senior
Madalyn Reichmann followed by two by Hanson secured the win.
The Pioneers shot 33.9 percent (20-of-59) from the field, including 9-of-26 from deep, and made 10-of-17 (58.8 percent) from the foul line. The Blugolds finished shooting 37 percent (20-of-54) from the floor, 23.5 percent (4-of-17) from three-point range, and 73.3 percent (11-of-15) from the free throw line.
UW-Platteville will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 10 when they travel to UW-La Crosse for a 3 p.m. game.
