Fuhremann Leads Pioneers To Garding Against Cancer Win

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – Senior Joey Fuhremann scored a game-high 21 points as the No. 20 University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's basketball team (13-4, 5-1 WIAC) earned a 70-60 win over UW-Whitewater (12-5, 3-3 WIAC) on Wednesday night in Williams Fieldhouse at the annual Garding Against Cancer contest.

In total, $4078 was raised during the Garding Against Cancer event on Wednesday. All proceeds will support the Iowa County Cancer Coalition, Grant County Cancer Coalition, and the UW Carbone Cancer Center to help those in the area who are currently battling cancer. If you were unable to attend Wednesday's game and would like to donate, please contact gardj@uwplatt.edu to find out how you can still donate.

Fuhremann finished just shy of a double-double with 21 points and nine rebounds while shooting 6-of-8 from the floor and 9-of-10 from the free throw line. Joining him in double figures was senior Max Love who scored 10 points, while senior Miles Hettinger, junior Bristol Lewis, and junior Max Lucey each added nine points.

UW-Platteville led by six early in the game thanks to a seven-point run, but the Warhawks rallied and pulled ahead 23-20 with just over five minutes left in the first half. The Pioneers answered with eight straight points, including a one-handed dunk by Hettinger, to regain the lead. Including the eight-point run, UW-Platteville outscored UW-Whitewater 11-2 over the final five minutes of the half to take a 31-25 lead into the break.

The Warhawks quickly got back within two points until three-point makes by senior Aiden Wieczorek and Lewis pushed the Pioneers lead back to six. A three-point play by Lucey and a layup by junior Lucas Rameker extended the advantage to double digits for the first time, and Fuhremann knocked down a free throw to make it 56-42 with 8:20 left, UW-Platteville's largest lead of the game.

UW-Whitewater responded by going on a 12-3 run over the next four minutes to cut the deficit down to five, but six straight Pioneers points made it a 65-54 game with 1:20 remaining. The Warhawks got as close as seven in the final minute as UW-Platteville wrapped up the game with solid free throw shooting.

The Pioneers shot 48.9 percent (23-of-47) from the floor in the win, including 52.4 percent (11-of-21) in the second half. This helped offset some struggles from deep, as the Pioneers finished at 27.8 percent (5-of-18) from beyond the arc. UW-Platteville continued to be a strong free throw shooting team, going 19-of-27 (79.2 percent).

Richie Warren scored a team-high 17 points for the Warhawks, who finished at 40.0 percent (22-of-55) for the game. UW-Whitewater shot 33.3 percent (7-of-21) from three, and 60.0 percent (9-of-15) from the line.

UW-Platteville was strong on the glass, outrebounding UW-Whitewater 37-25, including 13-11 on the offensive end. The Pioneers have now posted double-digit rebound advantages in four of their past six games.

Up next will be a trip to UW-River Falls, as the Pioneers will face the Falcons on Saturday at 5 p.m.
