PLATTEVILLE, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team (15-7) swept the University of Dubuque (15-11) in the home opener Thursday evening. The Pioneers walked off with a 6-5 win in game one and shut out the Spartans 6-0 in game two.
In the opener, the Pioneers took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth, but four runs for Dubuque in the sixth left the Pioneers trailing 5-2 going into the bottom of the inning. With runners on first and second, junior Caitlin Giacomo doubled to left center, cutting the Spartans' lead to two runs. Two outs later, junior Melissa Dietz doubled, allowing sophomore Allison Peters and freshman Morgan Erickson to score the tying runs.
Locked 5-5 going into the bottom of the seventh, the Pioneers had the go-ahead run on third, but with two outs on the board. Pinch hitter and freshman Delaney Johnson stepped up to bat drilled one through the left side, scoring the go-ahead run and walking off with the 6-5 victory.
Senior Taylor Roughen pitched the first 5.2 innings, striking out six, walking four and allowing seven hits and five runs. Erickson captured the win and struck out one and allowed no hits or walks in the final 1.1 innings.
In the nightcap, the Pioneers got on the board early with a pair of runs scored in the first inning. UW-Platteville added another in the second inning and three more in the fifth.
Johnson finished 2-for-3 in game two to pace the Pioneers. In the circle, freshman Bentley Cutts struck out four, walked one and allowed three hits in the first 2.1 innings. Erickson (5-2) captured her second win of the day and struck out six and walked none while allowing one hit in the shutout.
The Pioneers will return to action and the UW-Platteville Softball Complex on Saturday, April 12 when they host UW-River Falls in their WIAC-opener on Senior Day.
