Pioneers Sweep Falcons on Senior Day

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. -  The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team (17-7, 2-0) defeated UW-River Falls (15-11, 0-2) by scores of 8-2 and 11-3 (five innings) in the WIAC opener on Saturday. The Pioneers also celebrated Senior Day between the games at the UW-Platteville Softball Complex.

In game one, the Falcons took a 2-0 lead with a 2RBI homer in the first inning, but the game was quickly tied when senior Autumn Grayczyk homered to left field in the bottom of the first. The Pioneers scored two more runs in the second and then four more unearned runs in the fifth, all with two outs.

Senior Felicia Teubert led off and paced the Pioneers in game one, finishing 3-for-4 with one run scored.

In the circle, senior Taylor Roughen (W, 6-3) pitched the first five innings and struck out three, walked two and allowed four hits and two runs. Freshman Morgan Erickson finished the first game and struck out two while allowing no hits.

In the second game, two runs scored for UW-Platteville in the first when junior Melissa Dietz doubled to right center. The Pioneers doubled their lead to 4-0 in the second as sophomore Allison Peters sent one over the left field wall. Senior Jordan Johnson drove in two more runs before the end of the second inning with a doubled to left center.

The Pioneers scored another run in the third and then the Falcons got on the board in the fourth. UW-River Falls added two more runs in the fifth to narrow the Pioneers lead to 7-3, but singles to right field by Teubert and Johnson pushed the lead to 10-3. With bases loaded, two outs and a full count, the Falcons walked Roughen for the walk-off walk which scored Johnson to call the game in five innings.

Freshman Bentley Cutts (W, 2-0) captured the win in game two. Cutts struck out two, walked three and allowed two hits and two runs. Eickson pitched the final 0.2 inning and struck out one, walked none and gave up two hits and a run.

The Pioneers will return to action on Monday, April 14 when they travel to Augustana for a doubleheader starting at 5 p.m.
