ANGOLA, Ind. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's basketball team (10-1) rolled past Olivet (1-8) 67-43 on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Cameron Holiday Classic hosted by Trine University.
The Pioneers got scoring from a variety of sources in the win, with sophomore
Grace Groezinger scoring a season-high 14 points off the bench to pace the team. Senior
Madalyn Reichmann dropped 13 points, while sophomore
Caitlyn Strom rounded out the scorers in double figures with 10 points.
Olivet opened the contest with eight unanswered points, but the Pioneers responded with nine straight to take the one-point lead. The two teams kept things close down the stretch in the first quarter, and the game entered the second even at 11 apiece.
UW-Platteville put together a dominant effort in the second, outscoring the Comets 22-6 to take a 33-17 lead into the break. Groezinger and Reichmann led the way in the frame, scoring 17 of the Pioneers 22 points while the defense forced eight Olivet turnovers. A 10-point run helped UW-Platteville pull away in the strong quarter.
The advantage continued to grow in the third quarter as the Pioneers helped Olivet to just six points again. Another 10-point run saw UW-Platteville carry a 50-23 lead entering the fourth. The lead reached a game-high 32 points at 65-33 with 2:53 left in the contest, and the Pioneers earned a sixth consecutive victory with the 67-43 win.
The Pioneers finished at 41.7 percent (25-of-60) shooting in the game, but just 15.8 percent (3-of-19) from the three-point range. UW-Platteville got the line often and shot 63.6 percent (14-of-22).
Olivet shot 37.0 percent (17-of-46) from the field and 23.5 percent (4-of-17) from deep. The Comets struggled to find consistency offensively, as UW-Platteville's defense forced 23 turnovers, including 16 steals. Senior
Ella Mackiewicz finished just shy of her career-high with seven steals, while Strom added five of her own.
UW-Platteville held a 41-29 advantage on the glass, with senior
Ashley Weir and Strom sharing the team lead with six each. Mackiewicz dished out a team-high seven assists, setting a new personal-best in that category.
The Pioneers wrapped up non-conference play with the win and will face UW-Stout at home to begin WIAC action on Saturday, January 3. Tip-off from Bo Ryan Court will take place at 3 p.m.
