Pioneers Advance To WIAC Championship In Penalty Kicks

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The second-seeded University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's soccer team (8-5-6, 2-1-4 WIAC) and third-seeded UW-River Falls (13-5-3, 3-3-1 WIAC) were scoreless after 110 minutes in the WIAC Semifinals match on Friday night from Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium. The Pioneers earned the right to advance to the championship game behind a 5-3 advantage in penalty kicks.

UW-Platteville held a 13-7 advantage in shots through regulation, including 4-3 in shots on goal. Junior Jess Morawski, junior Amanda Dietz, and freshman Devyn Davis combined to record the Pioneers four shots on goal.

Each team had one shot on target in the first overtime period, as Morawski got a look on goal in the 91st minute and junior Marguerite Mueller turned aside a Falcons shot in the closing seconds. In the second overtime, Dietz had a chance in the 104th minute but the game remained scoreless and moved to penalty kicks.

Junior Elise Kukuck opened the penalty kick portion with a score and Mueller came back and saved the Falcons first attempt. UW-Platteville proceeded to score on their next four tries to earn a trip to the championship game. Sophomore Janelle Minor, Davis, Morawski, and sophomore Ava Peterson each converted penalty kicks for the Pioneers following Kukuck's first score.

For the match, UW-Platteville outshot the Falcons 15-8 overall and 6-4 in shots on goal. Mueller made four saves across the 110 minutes to record the shutout for the Pioneers.

The Pioneers advance to the WIAC Championship game for the third straight year to take on top-seeded UW-La Crosse, who beat UW-Stevens Point 9-0 to move on. Sunday's championship game will begin at 1 p.m. with the winner earning the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
