PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – Junior
Bristol Lewis drained a go-ahead three-pointers with 16 seconds remaining in overtime as the University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's basketball team (4-2) outlasted Augustana (Ill.) (3-2) by a score of 76-74 on Tuesday night from Bo Ryan Court.
Lewis finished with a game-high 20 points while going 5-of-7 from three-point range. Three other players joined him in double figures, including senior
Joey Fuhremann, who posted a 14-point, 13-rebound double-double on a perfect 5-of-5 shooting. Senior
Max Love added 12 points, while senior
Miles Hettinger pitched in with 11 points off the bench.
UW-Platteville started slow offensively which allowed Augustana to command an eight-point advantage at 25-17 with eight minutes remaining in the first half. The Pioneers erased that deficit over the next couple minutes behind an 8-0 run that featured a three-pointer by Lewis and a layup by Hettinger. The Vikings regained the lead and held a slight 37-34 lead heading into the break.
Lewis tied the game out of halftime with a three-point make and Fuhremann gave UW-Platteville its first lead of the game at 40-39 following a three-point play. The Pioneers went to work down low, getting buckets inside by Hettinger, Fuhremann, and senior
Aiden Wieczorek before finding Lewis for a kick-out three to take a 57-48 lead with 8:11 left in regulation.
The lead grew to 11 points on a layup by junior
Lucas Rameker with five minutes remaining, but the Vikings responded with a 16-2 run to flip the score in their favor at 69-66. Love knotted the game back up with a second chance three with 1:26 left and each team made layups in the final minute to send the game to overtime tied at 70.
Fuhremann scored the first basket of the extra period before Augustana answered with four points to take a two-point lead with 2:31 left. Neither team would score for over two minutes until Lewis drilled a transition three with 16 seconds left to put UW-Platteville up one. Following a Vikings miss, Lewis went to the line and converted one of two tries to make it 76-74 with two seconds remaining. Augustana attempted a half court look as time expired, but the try was wide right and UW-Platteville hung on to win.
The Pioneers shot 41.7 percent (25-of-60) for the game, including 34.6 percent (9-of-26) from three-point range. UW-Platteville went 17-of-23 (73.9 percent) from the stripe in the win.
Augustana finished at 43.3 percent (26-of-60) and 42.1 percent (8-of-19) from long range. The Vikings shot a similar percentage to the Pioneers from the line, going 14-of-19 (73.7 percent). Leading the way for the visiting team was Jake Willems who scored 19 points.
UW-Platteville held a slight advantage in the rebounding column, 37-34. Fuhremann grabbed five offensive rebounds to lead the way for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers will have some time off before facing Dubuque at home on Saturday, December 5. Tip-off inside Williams Fieldhouse is set for 5 p.m.
