Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Pioneers Fall to Red Hawks Tuesday Night

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's basketball team (4-1) suffered its first loss of the season 69-54 to Ripon College (5-1) Tuesday night on Bo Ryan Court.

The team wore special warm-up shirts prior to the game which recognized the game as Diabetes Awareness Night.

Senior Ella Mackiewicz scored a team-high 14 points on 3-of-5 shooting from deep while creating two steals. Senior Barb Kling added eight points off the bench and sophomore Ava Hanson posted a team-best three rebounds and three assists.

The Pioneers shot 33.3 percent (18-of-54) from the floor, including 37.5 percent (9-of-24) from beyond the arc. Ripon sat at 46.2 percent (24-of-52) in the game and held a big advantage at the free throw line (17-of-21) compared to UW-Platteville (9-of-12).

The Redhawks took a five-point lead two minutes into the game, but a made three by Mackiewicz followed by two made free throws by Hanson put the Pioneers ahead by three. Ripon finished the first quarter on a 14-4 run, but a comeback in the middle of the second period capped by a made three by freshman Macie Neumeister cut the visiting team's lead to 28-26.

UW-Platteville trailed 37-30 at the half, but a made jumper by Kling at the 5:45 mark of the third quarter made it a one possession game once again. The teams traded baskets from there, but an 11-3 run at the start of the fourth quarter pushed Ripon's advantage to 59-44 midway through the final quarter and the Red Hawks held on to that double-digit lead for the remainder of the game.

The Pioneers will return to Bo Ryan Court on Saturday, Nov. 29 when they take on Simpson College at 7:30 p.m. in the first day of the Marc Heidorf Memorial Classic.
