WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's basketball team (3-0) wrapped up a successful road trip with a 66-61 overtime win over Whitman (2-2) in the final game of the Kim Evanger Raney Memorial Classic inside the Sherwood Center in Walla Walla, Washington on Saturday afternoon.
Four Pioneers finished in double figures in the victory, led by senior
Ella Mackiewicz's 17 points on 6-of-14 shooting. Sophomore
Grace Groezinger added 12 points in just 15 minutes off the bench, going a perfect 4-of-4 from the field, while
Tatum Weir (11 points) and
Madalyn Reichmann (10) also reached double digits.
The Blues scored the game's first points with a three, but Mackiewicz answered with a triple of her own not long after to tie it up. The two teams went back-and-forth for much of the opening quarter, and Whitman held a 15-12 lead heading into the second.
Mackiewicz scored the Pioneers first five points of the second to tie the game at 17 apiece and later gave UW-Platteville the lead at 20-19 with 7:52 remaining in the half. The Pioneers led by as many as three as the contest neared halftime until four straight put Whitman back up one. Reichmann sent UW-Platteville into the locker room with a one-point lead after a jumper with four seconds left made it 28-27.
The lead flipped back to the Blues in the third quarter and the game entered the final quarter with Whitman up 41-38. That lead grew to eight in the first minute of the fourth, but Groezinger scored five straight points to cut the deficit to three. The Pioneers hung close and got back within one on layups by
Tatum Weir and
Ashley Weir. Groezinger made a layup to give UW-Platteville the lead, but Whitman tied the game at 51 at the free throw line with 20 seconds left to force overtime.
The teams traded points to begin overtime until four straight points by Reichmann helped the Pioneers go up 60-55 with 1:50 left. Sophomore Avan Hanson extended the lead to seven with a jumper and later pushed the lead up to eight with four free throw makes. Whitman hit a three with nine seconds left but that resulted in the final points of the game as the Pioneers won in overtime.
UW-Platteville shot a season-high 52.3 percent (23-of-44) from the floor while going 2-of-8 (25.0 percent) from three-point range. The Pioneers went 66.7 percent (18-of-27) from the free throw line.
Mackiewicz grabbed a team-high eight rebounds as the Pioneers held a 29-24 edge on the glass. Reichmann dished out three assists to pace the team.
Whitman shot 38.1 percent (24-of-63) from the floor and 34.8 percent (8-of-23) from beyond the arc. Avery Neal and Jordan Leith led the Blues with 14 points.
The Pioneers will travel to Dubuque next Friday for a 6 p.m. game against the Spartans.
