Pioneers Split on Saturday

CHICAGO, Ill. - The University of Wisconsin-Platteville volleyball team split a pair of non-conference matches Saturday as the University of Chicago hosted a triangular with North Central College. The Pioneers (17-11) defeated Chicago (13-12) in four sets after falling earlier in the day to North Central (17-7), also in four sets.

Sophomore Abby Bauer had a stellar day, totaling 27 kills with 13 in the first match and 14 in the next. Junior Kennedy Wenger had a career best 18 kills in the first set behind a .432 kill percentage. 

The Pioneers started the day with a block party against the Cardinals, dishing out 10 total blocks compared to North Central's three. Senior Kierney McDonald paced the Pioneers in the match with two solos and two block assists. 

North Central took the first two sets 25-19 and 25-22. The Pioneers rallied with a 25-17 win in the third set, but North Central finished off the match with a 25-23 victory. The Pioneers held a 54-51 advantage in kills and .219 - .197 edge in hitting percentage. 

UW-Platteville kept their dominance at the net going into the second match as they topped the prior performance with 12 kills. Wenger went off in the match and totaled three solo blocks and four block assists in the win. Wenger also totaled five service aces against Chicago.

The Pioneers held Chicago to -.054 hitting in the first set as they won 25-18. The Maroons took the next 25-21, but UW-Platteville finished off the match with back-to-back 25-20 wins. 

Senior Kelsey Ewert paced the Pioneers with 34 digs on the day while Bauer was right behind with 32 digs. Junior Ava Valentin led the Pioneers with 33 assists across both matches. 

UW-Platteville will close out the regular season portion of the schedule on Friday, Nov. 7 when the team hosts UW-River Falls on Senior Night at 5 p.m.
