Pioneers Swept by No. 3 Titans

OSHKOSH, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville volleyball team (14-9, 3-2) was swept by No. 3 UW-Oshkosh (22-2, 5-0) by scores of 25-17, 25-17, and 25-21 on Wednesday night inside the Kolf Sports Center.

The Titans capitalized on a nine-point run in the first set, jumping out to a 13-6 lead. The Pioneers strung together a 6-0 run of their own, but it was not enough and the Titans took the first set 25-17. UW-Platteville fell behind 10-1 in the second set and a late 5-1 run was not enough to overcome the early deficit.

The Pioneers kept the match alive in the third set as multiple kills by both senior Kierney McDonald and junior Kennedy Wenger put the Pioneers ahead 10-7. The Titans reached match point at 24-17, but McDonald and sophomore Abby Bauer strung together a kill and a pair of blocks at the end of the match to bring the final score of set three to 25-21.

McDonald finished with a team-high seven kills, four solo blocks and two block assists. Senior Kelsey Ewert finished with 19 digs and freshman Delali Amankwa had a team-best 10 assists.

It wasn't a very strong hitting night for either squad, as the Titans finished hitting a season-low .050 while they held the Pioneers in the negative with a -.086 hitting percentage. Overall, UW-Oshkosh finished holding a 13-7 advantage in blocks on the night.

The Pioneers will look to bounce back this weekend with a pair of non-conference matches in Jacksonville, Illinois on Saturday, October 25. First up is Monmouth at 2 p.m. followed by Illinois College at 4 p.m.
