Volleyball Sweeps Edgewood Tuesday

MADISON, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville volleyball team (4-0) earned its fourth consecutive sweep to start the season on Tuesday with a 3-0 win over Edgewood (1-2) on Tuesday night inside the Todd Wehr Edgedome in Madison.

The Pioneers led throughout the opening set and pulled away from the Eagles with separate runs of 4-0 and 7-2. Behind an impressive .469 hitting percentage, UW-Platteville claimed the first set by a score of 25-16.

That momentum carried over into set two, as the Pioneers led by as many as five in the early stages. Edgewood worked its way back and tied the set at 19, but UW-Platteville rattled off the next six points to win 25-19.

The Eagles led by four midway through the third set until the Pioneers scored seven unanswered points to move in front 19-16. Edgewood answered with a six-point run of its own to take a one-point lead until junior Kierney McDonald evened the set at 23 apiece. The set went into extra points, but the Pioneers secured the sweep by scoring three straight points to win 28-26.

McDonald finished with a team-high 18 kills, while senior Emma Carlson (11) and freshman Brooklyn Radecke (10) also reached double figures. UW-Platteville totaled 46 total kills across the three sets while posting a .224 hitting percentage.

Junior Gracie Gibbens tallied 38 assists and 10 digs in the match, while Carlson (17) and junior Bri Gartner (15) each recorded double-digit digs as well.

UW-Platteville was exceptional at the net, finishing with one solo block and 16 block assists. Sophomores Kelsey Drake and Delaney Graves led the way with five block assists each.

The Pioneers head to the Coe College Tournament this weekend and will begin a three-game trip against Grinnell on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m.
