PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – In front of a record-setting crowd, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville volleyball team (19-3) rallied for a 3-2 win after dropping the first two sets against Cornell (7-11) at the annual Yell Night match Friday inside Williams Fieldhouse.
The attendance for Friday's match came in at 1745, the highest mark in Pioneers Yell Night history. The number is also the best in program history since attendance began being tracked, surpassing the previous record of 1252 set in 2011.
The Pioneers fell behind by two sets to begin the match after Cornell used late pushes to pick up wins of 25-21 and 25-20. UW-Platteville totaled 22 kills against 16 errors across those first two sets, while the Rams had 24 kills against just 10 errors.
UW-Platteville rebounded to win the third set 25-19 after erasing a five-point deficit behind a 16-5 run. Senior Emma Carlson led the attack with seven of the Pioneers 14 kills in the set. That momentum carried over into the fourth set, as eight more kills from Carlson led UW-Platteville to a 25-21 win.
The decisive fifth set went back-and-forth at the start, but two kills by junior Kierney McDonald and another by freshman Brooklyn Radecke put the Pioneers in front by three at 10-7. Carlson added three more kills down the stretch and sophomore Kennedy Wenger put the finishing touches on the comeback with the match-deciding kill as UW-Platteville won 15-11.
Carlson finished with a season-high 28 kills and collected the double-double by adding a match-high 18 digs. The senior reached exactly 1500 career kills on her last point of the night, and she posted a .254 hitting percentage across 71 total attacks in the match.
McDonald (14) and Wenger (11) also reached double digit kills as the Pioneers matched a season-high team total with 64 kills. UW-Platteville hit .220 as a team in the match, but were especially effective in the final set, hitting .550 with 11 kills.
Junior Gracie Gibbens had a career-high 53 assists, surpassing her previous best of 52 from earlier this season. She added 10 digs to finish as one of five Pioneers to reach double digits in that category. Junior Bri Gartner (13), freshman Abby Bauer (10), and sophomore Grace Betke (10) joined Gibbens and Carlson with double-digit digs.
The Pioneers also finished with 11 service aces in the match led by Gartner's three. Carlson, Gibbens, and Bauer each had two service aces.
UW-Platteville will have the rest of the weekend off before welcoming in UW-Eau Claire for a WIAC matchup on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
