Late Goal Sends Pioneers Past Eagles

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – Freshman Sophie Carlos netted the game-winning goal in the 85th minute as the University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's soccer team (2-0-1) picked up a 2-1 win over Edgewood (1-1-0) on Wednesday night inside Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.

Edgewood scored directly off a corner kick just four minutes in to take the early one goal advantage. The Pioneers answered in the 33rd minute, as junior Anna Spindle she converted a header following a well-placed pass from junior Arianna Lombardi.

Lombardi contributed on the UW-Platteville game-winning goal in the 85th minute with another perfect find that allowed Carlos to score her first career goal. Carlos beat the keeper for the deciding goal in a 2-1 Pioneers win.

The Pioneers dominated the chances for much of the match, outshooting the Eagles 26-4 and 9-3 in shots on goal. Lombardi finished with a match-high eight shots, while Carlos and junior Lauren Lodico each tallied three.

UW-Platteville also held a 12-4 advantage in corner kicks in the match.

Freshman Madison Way improved to 2-0-1 on the season by stopping two of the three shots she faced.

The Pioneers begin a three-match road trip next week starting with Coe on Wednesday. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
