Big first half propels Pioneers past Concordia Chicago

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The #5 nationally ranked University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's basketball team put up 52 first half points and finished with an 88-60 victory at Concordia Chicago to extend its streak to 5-0. The win in Geiseman Gymnasium marks the first since a 112-49 win over Finlandia University on November 10, 2019 where the Pioneers splashed 50 points or more on the board in the first half.

The Pioneers were ready out of the gates and banked up 12 unanswered points in first five minutes of the game. They did not stop there and finished the half on a 15-6 run to lead the Cougars 52-30. UW-Platteville capitalized on opportunities from the free throw line and went 19-of-20 in the half. 

UW-Platteville stretched its lead to its largest mark of the evening with 8:05 remaining and led 79-44 (35).  The Cougars never managed to draw in closer than 27 before the Pioneers won 88-66.

Logan Pearson (So. / Appleton, Wis.) added to his 10 points of the first half and finished with a game-high 18, shot 6-of-8 from the field and added four assists.  Quentin Shields (Sr. / Chicago, Ill.) registered 14 points and a game-high five assists. Blake McCann (Sr. / Janesville, Wis.) was the third Pioneer to finish in double figures with 11 points. 

The Pioneers finished 27-of-34 (79.4 percent) from the free throw line. UW-Platteville shot 56.3 percent (27-of-48) from the field and were 7-of-18 (38.9 percent) from the three-point arc. The Cougars finished 32.8 percent (19-of-58) from the floor and 20.8 percent (5-of-24) from three-point territory.

UW-Platteville will return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 23 when they return to Bo Ryan Court for Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night. Game time against Illinois Tech is set for 7 p.m.
