Pioneers drop first conference game of the season

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's basketball team (13-2, 3-1 WIAC) ranked No. 7 on the D3hoops.com poll, fell to UW-Stevens Point (11-4, 3-1 WIAC) 64-66 on Wednesday night. The Pioneers move into a four-way tie for first place in the WIAC standings.

First half

  • The Pioneers got out to an 8-2 lead in the first four minutes before allowing a 12-0 Pointer run to make it 8-14. 
  • The Pioneers trailed 28-33 and scored six unanswered points in the final 2:33 of the first half to take a 34-33 lead going into halftime.
  • Senior Carter Voelker had 12 points and eight rebounds and went 5-of-5 from the free throw line.
  • Sophomore Kyle Tuma had three assists, two rebounds, two blocks and a steal while knocking down his only shot of the half to add three points.
  • The Pioneers shot 47.8% (11-of-23) from the field and 50% (4-of-8) from three-point range and the Pointers shot 36.4% (12-of-33) from the field and 28.6% (4-of-14) on three-point attempts.
  • The Pioneers shot were a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line and UW-Stevens Point also shot 100% (5-of-5).

Second half

  • The Pioneers trailed 48-57 and the Pioneers went on a 9-0 run including back-to-back three-pointers by junior Alex Ranney.
  • Voelker had 12 points on 44.4% (4-of-9) shooting from the field while adding five rebounds in the second half. 
  • Ranney scored eight points and shot 2-of-2 on three-pointers in the second half. 
  • The Pioneers shot 40.7% (11-of-27) from the field and 27.3% (3-of-11) from three-point range while UW-Stevens Point shot 48.1% (13-of-27) from the field and 36.4% (4-of-11) on three-pointers. 
  • The Pioneers shot 62.5% (5-of-8) from the free throw line while UW-Stevens Point shot 75% (3-of-4). 

Notables 

  • UW-Platteville fell to 13-2 overall, 3-1 WIAC.
  • UW-Stevens Point improved to 11-4 overall, 3-1 WIAC. 
  • Voelker recorded a double double with 24 points and 13 rebounds. He added three assists and a steal on the night.
  • Ranney had 10 points, six rebounds, four assists and a block. He shot 57.1% (4-of-7) from the field and 100% (2-of-2) from three-point range.
  • UW-Platteville shot 44% (22-of-50) from the field and 36.8% (7-of-19) from beyond the three-point arc. UW-Stevens Point shot 38.5% (20-of-52) from the field and (4-of-16) from three-point territory.
  • The Pioneers shot 81.3% (13-of-16) from the free throw line while the Pointers shot 88.9% (8-of-9).
