Last second shot gives Pioneers their first loss

BELTON, Texas. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's basketball team (10-1) ranked No. 9 on the D3hoops.com poll, fell to Mary Hardin-Baylor (9-1) Saturday night in their last game of the 2019 Cru Classic. A Crusader jump shot gave them a 74-72 lead with :02 remaining in the game.  

First half

  • The score was tied 32-32 before the Crusaders finished the half on an 8-1 run.
  • The Pioneers went into halftime trailing the Crusaders 33-40.
  • The Pioneers shot 33.3% (12-of-36) from the field and 46.2% (6-of-13) from three-point range and the Crusaders shot 50% (16-of-32) from the field and 26.7% (4-of-15) on three-point attempts.
  • The Pioneers shot 83.3% (5-of-6) from the free throw line and Mary Hardin-Baylor shot 40% (2-of-5).

Second half

  • The Pioneers scored 10 unanswered points opening the second half and took a 43-40 lead.
  • For the remainder of the game neither team led by more than four points.
  • Junior Quentin Shields scored with :09 remaining to tie the game at 72-72.
  • The Pioneers shot 41.1% (14-of-34) from the field and 26.7% (4-of-15) from three-point range while Mary Hardin-Baylor shot 38.5% (10-of-26) from the field and 0% (0-of-6) on three-pointers. 
  • The Pioneers shot 70% (7-of-10) from the free throw line while Mary Hardin-Baylor shot 66.7% (14-of-21). 

Notables 

  • UW-Platteville fell to 10-1 on the season.
  • Mary Hardin-Baylor improved to 9-1 overall. 
  • Junior Justin Stovall scored 18 points on 50% (7-of-14) shooting from the field. Stovall added eight rebounds, three assists and two steals.
  • Senior Carter Voelker had 12 points, five rebounds and led the Pioneers with six assists.
  • Sophomore Kyle Tuma had 12 points, all coming from three-point shots. Tuma was 4-of-7 on three-pointers. 
  • There were 50 lead changes and 16 ties in the back and forth game. 
  • UW-Platteville shot 37.1% (26-of-70) from the field and 24.2% (8-of-33) from beyond the three-point arc. Mary Hardin-Baylor shot 44.8% (26-of-58) and 21.1% (6-of-19) from three-point territory.
  • The Pioneers shot 75% (12-of-16) from the free throw line while the Crusaders shot 61.5% (16-of-26).
