Pioneers have hot start, hold on to down Redhawks

The University of Wisconsin-Platteville held off Ripon 81-73 in their first home game of the year, thanks in part to a 28 point first quarter.

The Pioneers (2-2) were up 9-4 on the Redhawks (2-2) with just over five minutes left in the first quarter when UW-Platteville went on an 11-3 run. All 11 Pioneer points were scored by Kassie Hansen. A pair of 3-pointers by Jalen Knowlton and Maiah Domask, and a buzzer beater layup by Allison Prestegaard, gave the Pioneers a 28-11 advantage going into the second quarter.

The two teams played next to even over the next two quarters and UW-Platteville took a 62-44 lead into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth the Redhawks went on several runs to get themselves back into the game. With 56 seconds left Emma McDonald hit a three to cut the Pioneers' lead to six, but UW-Platteville made their free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

Hansen led the Pioneers with a career high 19 points to go along with a season high 8 rebounds. Blaire Lutes added a season high 12 points and Domask had a career high 10.

McDonald collected a game high 20 points for Ripon.

The Pioneers stay at home for their next matchup on Wednesday, Nov. 29 against Concordia. Tip-off is at 6 p.m. on Bo Ryan Court.
