PLATTEVILLE, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's soccer team opened its season at home on Thursday Sept. 1 against Cornell College with a thrilling 2-1 victory at Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.
After a scoreless first half, Cornell senior Deidre Franzen found the back of the net to put the Rams up 1-0 with 40:18 left on the clock. The Pioneers were able to respond as Yamilex Jaramilo eluded defenders and scored with 13:05 left on the clock. The Pioneers offense was not done though, and took the lead with only 6:33 left in the game as Julie Divita was able to find the net following a shot off the post and a blocked shot by Rams goalie Clara Garcia. This goal put UW-Platteville up 2-1, which proved to be the difference maker as the Pioneers held onto the lead and picked their first win of the season.
With the victory the Pioneers moved to 1-0 on the season, while Cornell College fell to 0-2. The Pioneers will next play Coe at 4 p.m. on Saturday Sept. in Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium. Coe opened its season with a 1-0 loss against Aurora University.
