PLATTEVILLE, Wis. —The University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team played host to the UW-Stout Blue Devils on Sunday in doubleheader action at Kendall Murray Field. The Pioneers took the first game 6-5 and the second game 4-3 in extra innings, taking them to 18-17 on the season and 4-12 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Seniors
Zack Iverson and
Casey Schroeder played well for the Pioneers in the first, logging three hits apiece in just four at-bats, Schroeder earning three RBIs and scoring the winning run himself in the win.
With the Blue Devils ahead 5-3 heading into the bottom of the ninth, the Pioneers needed three to take the win, and they did just that. A Schroeder double to left center field brought in two to tie the game at 5-5 and put Schroeder in scoring position. Senior
Tanner Galeazzi had the game-winning single to left field, bringing in Schroeder to give the Pioneers the 6-5 win.
The second game had a familiar turnout. The Pioneers went ahead 3-0 heading into the sixth where the Blue Devils put one run on the board before adding two more in the top of the eighth to tie the game 3-3.
After a scoreless ninth inning, the game went into extra innings, the Pioneers holding the Blue Devils to zero runs in the top of the tenth after quickly going three up and three down.
With two men on base, sophomore
Brennan Kearney reached first on an error by the Blue Devils and senior
Evan Greco touched home plate to score the game-winning run, giving the Pioneers the 4-3 win.
The Pioneers return to action on Wednesday, May 4 at Edgewood College in Madison, Wisconsin at 7 p.m.
