The University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team swept a doubleheader against host No. 14 UW-Stevens Point on Friday, 1-0 and 3-2 at University Field in Stevens Point.
The doubleheader sweep raises the Pioneers record to 11-26 overall and 7-15 in the WIAC. UW-Platteville has now won six of its last eight games in the process. The doubleheader sweep is the first time that the Pioneers have swept UW-Stevens Point since 1996. The two losses drops the Pointers to 25-13 overall and 13-9 in the WIAC.
In game one, for the second-straight week, UW-Platteville got a complete game from junior pitcher Bill Oppriecht. The Seneca, Wisconsin native struck out seven and picked up the necessary offensive support in the eighth inning. With the win, he raises his record to 4-5 in a matchup against reigning WIAC Pitcher of the Week, Cam Seidl. The Pointers' right hander pitched eight innings allowing one earned run, surrendering five hits, walking four and striking out four in the loss.
In the eighth, with the game scoreless, Cody Luther walked and Levi Ney singled to put runners on first and third for Trevor Kattre. The senior singled to left field to plate Luther from third for the run.
The Pointers' posted threats in the eighth and ninth. In the bottom half of the eighth, Ryan Schliter singled to center field to start the inning. He attempted to stretch it into a double; however, Ney in centerfield got the hustling catcher out at second with a throw to Kattre at second to erase the threat.
In the ninth, Pioneers' catcher Topher Scheeler erased an early threat throwing out a runner at second. Later in the inning, with the tying run on third and the go-ahead run on second and two out, Oppriecht got a ground out to end the game.
In game two, the Pioneers rallied from an early 1-0 deficit for the 3-2 win. UW-Stevens Point scored first on a RBI single in the third for a 1-0 lead. However, the Pioneers plated a run in the fourth to tie and two in the sixth to take a 3-1 lead before giving up a run in the bottom of the sixth for the 3-2 win.
With a 1-0 deficit in the fourth, Kattre reached on a one-out walk to start the rally. Then, with two out, he stole second base. Then, a hit-by-pitch and walk loaded the bases for freshman Evan Greco, who delivered a single to right field to tie the game, scoring Kattre from third.
Kattre, again, started the rally for the Pioneers in the sixth when he reached base on a single to start the inning. He stole second and came around to score with a double by Topher Scheeler to put the Pioneers up 2-1. A Zach Demmon sacrifice bunt moved Scheeler to third for the first out. Then, the Pointers changed pitchers to face the youth of the UW-Platteville lineup. After a strikeout, appeared to silence the threat, Greco delivered his second two-out RBI single to plate Scheeler from third to stretch the lead to 3-1.
The Pointers cut the deficit to one, 3-2, with a RBI single down the left-field line in its half of the sixth. UW-Stevens Point stranded potential go-ahead and tying runs down the stretch. They left two in the seventh, one in both the eighth and ninth.
