After sophomore Danielle Hopkins
for UW-Platteville hit back-to-back 3 pointers following the eighth
tie of the game, the Pioneers' women's basketball team never
trailed en route to a 69-60 win over UW-Superior on Saturday
afternoon at Bo Ryan Court.
The Pioneers (7-11, 3-6 WIAC) were
led by the first career double double performance by Kim Wellnitz,
who had 12 points and 10 rebounds. She was joined in double figures
by Claire Poad and Liz Lawinger, who scored 14 and 12 points,
respectively.
The Yellow Jackets (9-8, 3-6 WIAC)
were led by Connie Urmanski and Sally Linzmeier, who each had 15
points and Hailey Hart added 10 in the loss.
Facing a 27-22 deficit in the first
half with 3:18 to play, Poad scored five-straight points to tie the
game at 27 and for the third time of the game. The contest remained
close that included five more ties until the big shots by the
sophomore from Byron, Illinois.
After taking the lead on the 3
pointers by Hopkins, the Yellow Jackets' Linzmeier scored
seven-consecutive points to bring the visitors within two, 59-57
with 2:44 to play. Then, the Pioneers turned up the intensity on
the defensive end as they forced turnovers on three-consecutive
possessions and offensively, the Pioneers stretched its lead to
seven, 64-57.
Next, the Pioneers will travel to
the UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday, Jan. 25 at 7 p.m.
