The University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's basketball team
dropped a 76-66 decision to Concordia University on Friday night in
the 2011 Gabe Miller Tip-Off Classic.
The Pioneers (1-1) raced out to an early nine-point lead in the
first half, but the visitors clawed back to take its first lead
with 6:05 left in the first 20 minutes. The lead went back and
forth for the remainder of the half for the first 20 minutes and
Concordia went into the halftime break with a lead when Luke
Doedens hit a jumper for two of his game-high 24 points in the
final seconds for a 42-41 lead.
Concordia (2-0) took a five-point lead to start the second half
but the Pioneers were able to cut deficit to as little as one on a
pair of occasions. Each threat by the Pioneers was answered by the
Falcons, who came back with a 7-1 spurt, late in the half. In the
spurt, Ben Brooke hit a 3 pointer at the 6:33 mark with the shot
clock winding down. Doedens was not alone in double figures as
Mitchell Schneider added 22 to the winning cause. Nick Doedens and
Brooke each had nine valuable points.
The Pioneers did get a pair of career-best performances in the
loss, junior Rob Stallion scored a career-high 17 points and senior
B.J. Litz had a career-high eight points and four rebounds.
UW-Platteville will close out the two-day tournament when they host
North Park, who won the first game of the day by a 54-52 margin
over WIAC member, UW-Eau Claire. Tip off between the Pioneers and
the Vikings is scheduled for 7 p.m.
