Carlos Concepcion capped a 99-yard drive with a three-yard
touchdown run, helping visiting UW-Stout top UW-Platteville 28-23
Saturday.
Concepcion's go-ahead score came with 6:33 to play. Zak Brinkman
pinned the Blue Devils inside the one with a punt, but Stout used
7:34 and 14 plays for the game-winning drive. The TD made the score
26-21, and Ross Carey passed to Luke Rieger for the two-point
conversion.
The Pioneers answered with a 14-play drive of their own that got
as far as the Stout 9, but Adam Churchill ended the threat with an
interception in the left-corner of the end zone with 58 seconds
left. The Blue Devils took a safety on the game's final play for
the 28-23 score.
Both teams are now 5-4 overall and 3-3 in the Wisconsin
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Darin Blaser caught a 7-yard scoring pass from Nick Anderson in
the first quarter, tying the game at 7-7, and Anderson hit a
leaping Sean Martinez with a 12-yard score 36 seconds before
halftime, making the score 17-14 Blue Devils.
UW-Platteville took a 21-17 lead in the third quarter when Eric
Leander intercepted a tipped Stout pass and ran 37 yards for a
touchdown. Stout's Richard Marteney kicked a 27-yard field goal on
the next possession, making the score 21-20.
Craig Warminski ran for 158 yards and a first-half score for
Stout, while Lee Vlasak ran for 58 in a role limited by a nagging
injury. Stout out-gained the Pioneers 342-293.
