Early deficit too much for Pioneers

UW-Stout used two intereception returns for touchdowns to help build a 29-0 lead, and the host Blue Devils went on to beat visiting UW-Platteville 43-10 Saturday.

Marcus Ball returned one pick 14 yards for a score, and Kendall Wade returned another 36 yards for another for the Blue Devils. They sandwiched an 11-yard Carlos Concepion scoring run and a one-yard Craig Warminski TD.

Tony Smidl kicked an 18-yard field goal on the last play of the first half, and reserve QB Mitch Shadley hit Paul Pridemore for a 49-yard touchdown on the first drive of the second half, as the Pioneers cut the lead to 29-10.

After the Blue Devils blocked their second punt of the game, Kyle Provos finished the six-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown. Concepcion added his second score, a 9-yard run, to finish the scoring in the third quarter.

Stout improved to 7-2 overall and 4-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while the Pioneers fell to 3-6, 1-5.

Shadley completed 18 of 25 passes for 207 yards for the Pioneers, with Aunton Terry catching 9 for 62 and Darin Blaser 6 for 65. Warminski's 91 yards rushing led UW-Stout.

Randy Langer led the Pioneer defense with 10 tackles, while Courtney Alexander and Eric Jensen each made interceptions.
