Sam Koenig is the Director of Athletics & Recreation at the University of Wisconsin–Platteville. He brings executive leadership experience in athletics administration, a strong financial background and a track record of building high-performing programs.
 
Koenig’s approach focuses on developing scholar-champions through academics, competitive excellence, leadership and community engagement. At UW–Platteville, he emphasizes providing a best-in-class student-athlete experience, fostering strong campus and community partnerships and responsible resource stewardship. He aims to advance sustainable revenue and engagement strategies in a rapidly evolving collegiate athletics landscape, positioning UW–Platteville athletics as a catalyst for student success, campus involvement and regional impact, all rooted in a culture of excellence, integrity and continuous growth.
 
Prior to becoming Director, Koenig held several leadership roles within UW–Platteville Athletics including Associate Athletic Director and Chief Financial Officer. He led financial strategy, budgeting, forecasting and EADA compliance for an athletics and recreation portfolio exceeding $4 million and partnered with university leadership, enrollment management and the UW–Platteville Foundation to strengthen long-term sustainability.
 
Koenig is also a nationally respected soccer coach known for building strong cultures and championship-level teams. His programs have made seven NCAA Tournament appearances, including two Sweet 16 runs, and won nine conference championships, while producing All-Americans and Academic All-Americans. Across head coach and assistant roles, his career record is 193-65-39 (.715).
 
Koenig was a standout student-athlete at Loras College, serving as a two-time team captain. He received national recognition for his excellence on the field, helping his team reach the NCAA National Finals, appear in three NCAA Final Fours and compete in four NCAA Sweet 16 tournaments, along with securing seven conference titles. Off the field, Koenig earned honors as a CoSIDA Academic All-American and NSCAA Scholar All-American.
 
He holds a master’s degree in College Athletic Administration from Coker College and a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Loras College (magna cum laude).
 
Koenig and his wife, Shannon, reside in the Tri-State area with their four children: Kathleen, Landon, Hazel and Rayna.
