Jesse Tinney is entering his sixth year at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Tinney joined the Pioneer staff as an assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s soccer programs in the summer of 2021 and was promoted to Head Men’s Soccer Coach in March of 2023.
Since being named head coach, Tinney has guided the Pioneers to a combined 36-11-15 record, three NCAA Tournament appearances, a NCAA Tournament Round of 16 appearance, and multiple conference award winners and All-Region selections. Under his leadership, the program has established itself as one of the premier NCAA Division III programs in the Midwest.
Prior to being named Head Men’s Soccer Coach, Tinney served as an assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s soccer programs from 2021-22. During that time, he helped the men’s program compile a 25-10-5 record, earn an NCAA Tournament appearance, and capture the 2022 Coast-to-Coast Coaching Staff of the Year award. Individual honors included Danny Gutzwiller being named Conference Rookie of the Year, Jack Gentilli earning multiple All-Region selections, and several Pioneers receiving All-Conference and All-Wisconsin recognition. On the women’s side, Tinney helped guide the program to a combined 21-12-5 record, including one of the best seasons in program history in 2022. The Pioneers advanced to the WIAC Tournament quarterfinals and produced multiple All-WIAC honorees during his tenure.
During the 2023 campaign, his first season as Head Men’s Soccer Coach, Tinney led the Pioneers to an overall record of 14-3-5 while facing the 10th toughest schedule in the nation. UW-Platteville finished as finalists in the Coast-to-Coast Conference Tournament and qualified for the NCAA National Tournament for the second consecutive year. The Pioneers were selected to host an NCAA Tournament first-round match and advanced to the Round of 32. The team finished among the nation’s leaders in goal differential, scoring offense, and goals against average. Individual honors included Konrad Ziaja being named Conference Defensive Player of the Year and Justin Williams earning Conference Rookie of the Year honors. Danny Gutzwiller, Konrad Ziaja, and Sebastian Carranza earned First Team All-Conference recognition, while Ziaja and Gutzwiller were named Second Team All-Region selections.
The team’s historic 2024 season proved to be one of the best campaigns in program history. Tinney guided the Pioneers to a 14-2-5 record (.786), the highest winning percentage in the NCAA era of the program. UW-Platteville finished as runners-up in the WIAC Tournament and earned its third consecutive NCAA Tournament berth. The Pioneers advanced to the NCAA Round of 16, tying the deepest postseason run in program history, and concluded the season ranked No. 14 nationally. The team finished third nationally in shutout percentage, seventh in goal differential, eighth in goals against average, and 27th in scoring offense. Individual honors included Seth Aiken being named WIAC Goalkeeper of the Year, Alex Wano earning WIAC Defender of the Year honors, Danny Gutzwiller receiving First Team All-Region recognition, Alex Wano and Seth Aiken being named Second Team All-Region selections, and Ethan Dietrich earning Third Team All-Region honors.
During the 2025 season, Tinney guided the Pioneers to an 8-6-5 overall record and a berth in the WIAC Tournament semifinals. The Pioneers earned eight WIAC postseason honors, highlighted by senior captain Danny Gutzwiller being named the WIAC Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete and a First Team All-WIAC selection. Sebastian Carranza and Ethan Dietrich also earned First Team All-WIAC honors, while freshman Roberto Salinas was named WIAC Co-Newcomer of the Year. Seth Aiken, Westley Hankes, and Alester Dawson received Honorable Mention All-WIAC recognition, and Christian Diaz was selected to the WIAC All-Sportsmanship Team.
The Pioneers also earned regional and academic recognition during the season. Gutzwiller collected his third career United Soccer Coaches All-Region honor after being named to the All-Region IX Third Team, while goalkeeper Seth Aiken earned All-Region honors for the second consecutive season with a Fourth Team selection. Aiken finished his career as the program’s all-time leader in shutouts with 25 and led the WIAC with seven shutouts during the 2025 campaign. Additionally, Gutzwiller and Chase Dwinal were recognized on the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team.
A Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native, Tinney graduated from Chartiers Valley High School where he was an All-Conference player and the MVP of the WPIAL All-Star Game. He served as a team captain and was a three-year letter-winner.
Tinney went on to a standout collegiate career as a midfielder at the University of Mount Union, appearing in 70 matches with 63 starts. During the 2018 season, Mount Union achieved its first-ever national ranking (#13), highest regional ranking (#2), and a school-record nine consecutive shutouts. Tinney was voted Team Rookie of the Year following the 2014 season, earned Offensive MVP honors in consecutive seasons, and was named the program’s Overall MVP in 2016. He graduated from Mount Union in 2018 with undergraduate degrees in Marketing and Business Management.
Following his collegiate playing career, Tinney coached for Beadling Soccer Club in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He worked with the club’s youth academy and 2008 boys team. Under his leadership, the 2008 team won the 2021 PA West State Cup and advanced to the USYS Eastern Regional Championship Final. The team was also selected to participate in the MLS NEXT Developmental League for the 2021 fall season, becoming the first team in club history to compete in the league.
Tinney currently holds a United States Soccer Federation C License and earned a Master of Education in Athletic Coaching from the University of Mount Union in May 2023.
