Pioneers Storm Past Falcons

RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team (13-9, 1-0 WIAC) rolled to an 8-2 victory over UW-River Falls (7-17, 0-1 WIAC) on a rainy Saturday. The second game of the doubleheader was postponed due to rain and will resume at a later date. 

Senior Melissa Dietz's two RBI single to right center scored two runs in the first inning. Junior Taylor Lynch scored shortly after on an error to give the Pioneers a 3-0 lead in the first frame. UW-Platteville added four unearned runs in the third inning on a double by junior Rylee Broshous, an error, a wild pitch and a passed ball. 

The rain continued to fall and the Falcons finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning when two runs scored on a pair of errors. Junior Allison Peters drove in the final run of the game when a single to left center scored senior Caitlin Giacomo

Peters paced the Pioneers and was 3-for-4 with an RBI and run in the first game of the day. Overall, the Pioneers outhit UW-River Falls 10-5 while holding a slim advantage in errors, 4-5. 

Junior Avery Lundblad (W, 3-2) captured the win in the circle, striking out one, walking two, and allowing four hits and two runs in five innings. Freshman Nora Buske closed the game in stellar fashion, striking out five, walking none and allowing one hit in the final two innings. 

The Pioneers and Falcons started the second game and were tied 5-5 in the bottom of the fifth when the game was paused due to rain. Unable to restart the game, the competition will be finished at a later date. 

UW-Platteville returns home on Wednesday, April 15 for a non-conference doubleheader against North Central College on Staff Appreciation Day. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
