INDIANOLA, Iowa – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team (13-5) dropped both games of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon against Simpson College (20-2). The Storm walked off with a 7-6 victory after an 11-inning brawl and then took the second game 13-5 in five innings.
In the first game, the Storm took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third, but the Pioneers took over the lead in the top of the fifth when sophomore Allison Peters doubled to right center, driving in two runs. Junior Felicia Teubert added another run when she homered the next inning. Simpson hit two home runs of their own to tie the game 3-3 after seven innings. The back-and-forth was not over as each team scored three runs in the eighth. It wasn't until all the way in the 11th inning when Megan Heidelbauer knocked one out of the park to end the marathon of a game.
Junior Carlie Jo Brownlee, freshman Morgan Erickson and senior Taylor Roughen all took turns in the circle in game one. Brownlee pitched the first four innings and totaled six strikeouts and walked two while allowing three hits and one earned run.
After 11 innings in the first game, the Storm sped out of the gates and scored nine runs in the first inning of the second game. Senior Jordan Johnson homered in the second and junior Melissa Dietz homered in the third inning to cut the lead to 9-4, but it was not enough as Simpson added four more runs to the Pioneers' one run in the fourth to call the game in five innings.
The Pioneers' weekend in Iowa will continue Sunday when they travel to Central College for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
