Pioneers Lose Doubleheader to No. 15 UW-Oshkosh

OSHKOSH, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team (23-13, 6-6) dropped each side of Wednesday's doubleheader against No. 15 nationally ranked UW-Oshkosh (32-6, 8-4), falling 3-0 both games.

While the Pioneers defense held the Titans strong hitting to just three runs in each game, UW-Platteville was unable to heat up on offense, totaling four hits across both games, to UW-Oshkosh's 20 hits.

In the opening contest, the Pioneers kept the game 0-0 going into the fifth inning, but a pair of RBI singles in the bottom of the frame, gave the Titans a 2-0 edge, followed by another run in the sixth.

Freshman Morgan Erickson (9-4) pitched a complete game, striking out five, walking one and allowing nine hits and three earned runs.

In game two, the Pioneers jumped out with an early chance in the top of the first thanks to a pair of back-to-back free bases, but it was not meant to be. UW-Oshkosh scored one run in the second off a fielder's choice and another in the fourth on a home run before the final run in the fifth.

Senior Taylor Roughen (7-6) started the game and struck out one, walked one and allowed eight hits and two runs in four innings. Freshmen Bentley Cutts and Erickson pitched an inning of relief and tallied one strikeout apiece.

The Pioneers will return to action and the UW-Platteville softball complex when they host UW-La Crosse on Saturday, Many 3 at 1 and 3 p.m. It's Youth Day and youth wearing a team jersey receive free entry.
