PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville track and field teams hosted day one of the UW-Platteville Invitational on Friday night, highlighted by the hammer throw and 13 combined heats of 5k races that ran well into the night from the Pioneers Track and Field Complex.
Men's Highlights
Junior Caden Schneider had a strong showing the men's 5k, placing 11th out of 274 total runners with a time of 14:12.36. His time was the fourth-best time among WIAC runners in the event.
Sophomore Zachary Sporaa came in 24th in the 5k, posting a time of 14:25.83. Sophomore Paul Pfeifer made it three Pioneers inside the top 40, as his time of 14:32.42 was good for 39th overall.
Senior Andrew Cunningham was the Pioneers top finisher in the hammer throw, placing 10th overall amongst the field of 57 finishers with a throw of 49.78m. Juniors Beau Kopp (48.74m) and McKade Jelinek (48.55m) also placed inside the top 20 in the event, taking 15th and 17th respectively.
Women's Highlights
Senior Hannah Fliss was UW-Platteville's top runner in the women's 5k race, taking 39th overall in the field of 134 competitors behind a time of 17:50.79. Sophomore Megan Hageman was the next Pioneer to finish in the event, crossing the finish in 18:31.75 to take 78th. Junior Avery Brown (18:37.79) and freshman Caitlin Wirth (18:42.60) finished not far behind for 86th and 88th respectively.
Sophomore Laura Weaver finished 20th overall in the hammer throw for the women's team, reaching a mark of 40.34m on her second attempt of the evening.
