Pioneers Split Pair of Games in Rochester

ROCHESTER, Minn. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team (5-1) split a pair of games on Sunday against Bethel University (3-2) and Luther College (3-4) hosted inside the Rochester Dome.  The Pioneers defeated the Royals 6-3 before dropping their first game of the season to the Norse in a narrow 3-2 loss.

Junior Melissa Dietz finished the day 4-for-6 with two RBI and two doubles. Sophomore Allison Peters registered two RBI after going 3-for-6 on the day.

In the first game against Bethel, the Pioneers went ahead early with two runs in the first, but the Royals tied it 2-2 by the end of the second inning.

In the fourth inning, junior Morgan Brummer singled to left field, batting in the go-ahead run, but a double by Peters followed by a single by Dietz brought in three more runs to give the Pioneers a 6-2 lead. The Royals scored their last run of the game in the bottom of the fourth on a SAC fly.

Junior Carlie Jo Brownlee started the day in the circle and pitched 3.1 innings, striking out six, walking four and allowing three hits and three runs. Freshman Morgan Erickson (3-1) got the win and pitched the remaining 3.2 innings, striking out two, walking one and allowing four hits.

In the game against Luther, the two teams went into the fifth inning with the scored still tied 0-0 and the Norse scored three runs on a pair of singles to left field. In the bottom of the sixth, Dietz drilled a double to centerfield and sophomore Mia Savage singled to left field to each score a run. Trailing 3-2 going into the bottom of the seventh, Erickson led off and singled to center field, but one out later, a double play eliminated the hopes of a late rally.

After senior Taylor Roughen pitched the first 4.1 innings, striking out two, walking none and allowing three hits and one run, Erickson entered the circle and suffered the loss, allowing three hits, two runs while striking out three and walking two batters.

The Pioneers will take a break until they travel to Clermont, Florida for a week of Spring Break games, starting with Westminster on March 23 at 9:15 a.m.
