PLATTEVILLE, Wis. The University of Wisconsin-Platteville wrestling team (0-1) fell 28-11 to Cornell College (1-1) in Thursday's home opener inside Williams Fieldhouse.

Junior Jackson Kirsch's win by pinfall in the 285-match closed out a hard-fought night where the Rams claimed eight of the 10 matches. The Pioneers totaled nine takedowns, two nearfalls and a technical fall in addition to Kirsch's victory.

Junior Chris Karbash started the night for the Pioneers at 125 and was locked 1-1 going into the final moments of the bout, but a last-second takedown secured the 4-1 decision for Jase Van Pelt. At 133, sophomore Brady Grennan came out swinging and put up a takedown and four-point nearfall within the first minute. Grennan led 8-6 at the start of the third, but Jayson Stevens strung together a takedown and nearfall in the final 30 seconds to pull ahead for a 12-8 decision. The Rams added to their lead with an 18-1 tech fall at 141, pulling ahead to an 11-0 advantage.

Freshman Luke Kamish shifted momentum to the Pioneers in the 149 match, jumping out to a 9-1 lead after one period behind two takedowns and a nearfall. Kamish added another takedown in the second and two more in the third to win by technical fall (20-3, 6:24) and give UW-Platteville its first five team points.

Cornell took the 157 bout by 7-3 decision and the 165 match by 13-6 decision. Trailing 17-5, Freshman Dawson McConnell held a 1-0 advantage going into the final period of the closely contested 174 match, but two late takedowns gave the Ram a 6-2 decision. Cornell took 184 by 5-1 decision and #11 Jackson Brinker won by tech fall (22-7, 7:00) in the next match, giving the Rams a 28-5 lead going into the last matchup.

In the final match of the evening, Kirsch was first to score with an escape to start the second period. The Pioneer added a takedown a minute later and then closed out the contestt with the lone pin of the night (4:54).

UW-Platteville will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 15 when they travel to the Luther College Open in Decorah. Wrestling starts at 9 a.m.
