LA CROSSE, Wis. -  The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team closed out its 2024 season on Saturday with a doubleheader at North Campus Field at UW-La Crosse. The Eagles took both games by scores of 2-0 and 5-0.

The Pioneers finish the season with 22 victories and became just the seventh team in program history to finish with 20 or more wins in a season.

The Pioneers conclude their season 22-16 overall and 2-12 in the extremely competitive WIAC. The Eagles improved to 22-18, 9-5 in the WIAC.

Pitching from both sides kept game one close and moving along as Taylor Roughen (14-8) and Elise Weinzierl (9-5) combined for 17 strikeouts and zero walks. Roughen tallied six of the strikeouts and surrendered five hits.

The Eagles jumped out to an early lead off a SAC fly in the bottom of the first. The Pioneers had bases loaded in the fifth, but were unable to tie the game and the Eagles added an unearned run in the sixth to double their lead.

In game two, UW-La Crosse's bats got hot in the third and the Eagles scored four runs before the end of the inning and a pitching change. The Eagles added one more run an inning later to extend their lead to 5-0.

Sophomore Carlie Jo Brownlee (6-8) started the game in the circle and pitched 2.2 innings, striking out three, walking none and allowing seven hits and four runs. Sophomore Jaena Michalak pitched the final 3.1 innings and walked two and allowed four hits.
