Pioneers drop twin bill at UW-Stout

MENOMONIE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team (21-5, 2-2 WIAC) dropped a pair of games to UW-Stout (17-12, 3-1 WIAC) on Saturday afternoon. After the Blue Devils walked off with a 2-1 win in the opener, UW-Stout captured the second game 5-2.

A homerun in the fifth put UW-Stout ahead 1-0 in the first game, but senior Danielle Trumbo doubled down the left line and batted in the tying run. The game stayed tied 1-1 until the Blue Devils walked off with the win following a double to right center.

Junior Taylor Roughen (14-2) pitched the complete first game and struck out five, walked none and allowed 10 hits and two runs.

In the second half of the doubleheader, UW-Stout took an early 1-0 lead after one inning. The Pioneers tied the game in the top of the third, scoring on an error. The tie was short-lived as the Blue Devils added two runs in the bottom of the third and another two in the fourth. Freshman Allison Peters' RBI single through the right side in the fifth cut UW-Stout's lead to 5-2, but neither team scored again.

Sophomore Carlie Jo Brownlee (5-3) pitched the first 3.1 innings and struck out three, walked three and allowed five hits and runs.

The Pioneers will return to action on Monday, April 22 when they travel to UW-Stevens Point for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
