UW-Platteville plays host to WIAC championships

The University of Wisconsin-Platteville team successfully hosted the 69th annual Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference wrestling championships Saturday in Williams Fieldhouse.

In the hotly contested team race, UW-La Crosse and UW-Eau Claire tied with 161.5 team points and were named co-champions, a first in WIAC history. The Eagles claimed their eighth straight title as the Blugolds secured their first title in program history. First-year Coach Topher Carton led the host Pioneers to a fifth-place finish, finishing ahead of UW-Oshkosh.

Four Pioneers placed sixth in their respective weight classes, including freshman Chris Karbash at 125. He led the Pioneers with a pair of pins, stopping UW-Stevens Point's Aiden Fonder in 4:09 and UW-Oshkosh's JP Culver in 2:58.

Junior David Cushman had two of the most exciting matches, beating UW-Stevens Point's Easton Hull in sudden victory in the quarterfinals and then falling to UW-Whitewater's Jermaine Butler in the same fashion in the semifinals at 157.

Sophomore Blake Delsman won twice at 165, including a pin over UW-Whitewater's Mason Hoopman in 1:20. Marty Koenig, the Pioneers' lone senior, recorded two victories at 184, including a 15-3 major decision over UW-Stevens Point's Jack Callen in the opening round.
