MT. VERNON, Iowa. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team split a Sunday afternoon doubleheader at Cornell College. The Pioneers (14-6) took the opener 6-1 and fell 4-2 in the second game, unable overcome the Rams' (5-11) early lead.
In game one, the Pioneers rushed out to an early 2-0 lead when sophomore Taylor Roughen brought in two runs on a two out single in the first inning. Freshman Melissa Dietz's single up the middle extended the lead to 3-0 in the third.
Cornell cut the lead by one in the fourth off a sacrifice fly, but UW-Platteville bounced back and secured the win with three RBI from senior Claire Bakkestuen's single to right center, Dietz's sacrifice fly and sophomore Jordan Johnson's single to right center.
Bakkestuen (6-3) collected the win when she relieved Johnson in the third inning. The senior tallied five strikeouts, zero walks and surrendered one hit. Alyssa Pearson (0-7) suffered the loss, striking out two, walking two and allowing six runs and hits.
In game two, the home team took over in the second inning after each team put one run on the board, the Rams scored on a sacrifice bunt before freshman Greta Volkening scored on a sacrifice fly.
Cornell added two runs in the second to jump out 3-1. Dietz led off at the top of the sixth and knocked one out of the park, but the Rams answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning to pull ahead 4-2.
Freshman Carlie Jo Brownlee (1-1) started game two for UW-Platteville and tallied one strikeout and allowed three hits and runs in 1.2 innings pitched before Roughen entered the circle where she stuck out four, walked none and allowed five hits and one run. Daelynn Rhoades (4-3) collected the win and struck out two, walked four and surrendered six hits and two run in seven innings.
The Pioneers will take a break until Friday, April 7 when they travel to UW-Whitewater for their first WIAC doubleheader. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
