WINTER HAVEN, FLA. – Hot bats and pitching by the University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team joined the hot Florida sun on Thursday. The Pioneers (8-4) defeated Washington and Jefferson (5-4) 8-0 in six innings and Oberlin College (2-6) 5-1. UW-Platteville tallied 24 hits and 12 RBI over the two games.
Senior Claire Bakkestuen (3-2) was 3-for-7, including two doubles, on the day and pitched a complete game in the Washington and Jefferson shutout where she stuck out nine, walked none and surrendered just five hits.
In the first game, UW-Platteville got on the board when senior Amanda Stanczuk doubled in the third inning to drive in two runs. Freshman Kate Davis then sent Stanczuk home when she homered to right center. The Pioneers picked up two more runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth to take an 8-0 lead to run-rule the game.
Sophomore Taylor Roughen led the Pioneers at the plate in game one going 3-for-4.
Oberlin got on the board in the first inning, scoring their lone run on the Pioneers' single error of the game.
Freshman Calli Storms' two-RBI single in the fourth put UW-Platteville on the board and gave them the lead. The Pioneers took the 2-1 lead into the seventh inning. With two outs and senior Payton Marvin on third base, Bakkestuen added another run with a double through the left side. Sophomore Jordan Johnson then added two more insurance runs with a two-RBI single through the right side.
Roughen (4-1) pitched a complete game against Oberlin striking out five, walking none and allowing ten hits and one unearned run.
The Pioneers wrap up their Florida trip on Friday with games against Westminster (Mo.) and Manchester.
