WAVERLY, Iowa – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville track and field teams competed at the Wartburg Select meet on Friday and Saturday in Waverly, Iowa. The Pioneer men finished third with 117 points, while the women finished fourth with 50 points. Wartburg claimed the meet on the men's and women's sides.
Men's Highlights
Sophomore Spencer Vanek ran a personal-best mark of 22.73 seconds in the 200m to place second. The Pioneers had four score in the 5000m, with senior Troy Humpal leading the group with a PR of 15:22.48. Junior Caleb Christiansen also ran a PR as he finished third in the event at 15:26.35. Freshman Caden Schneider (15:28.47) and sophomore Davin Dahl (15:50.49) finished fourth and eighth in the 5000m.
Sophomore Derrick Turner qualified for the 60m finals and posted a fifth-place finish with a time of 7.05 seconds. He also scored in the 200m with a seventh place finish (23.20). In the 60m hurdles, senior Cole Stugelmeyer ran a time of 8.56 in both the prelims and finals to finish third in the event. Sophomore Zach Zenner took sixth in the 800m at 1:59.93.
In the field events, junior Daniel Inyang posted a season-best 1.96m in the high jump and had two more solid jumps while attempting a PR. Sophomore Marcus Weaver and freshman Baylor Smith tied for fifth in the high jump at 1.81m. Senior Owen Miller finished fifth in the long jump at 6.14m while sophomore Evan Klinkner took second in the pole vault at 4.16m. In the triple jump, senior Weston Pink finished runner-up with a leap of 13.52m.
Senior Ben Veverka had a strong showing with the throws group with a third-place finish in the shot put (15.00m) and fourth-place finish in the weight throw (17.06m). Senior Justin Eichler won the weight throw at 17.22m and took fifth in the shot put (14.70m).
Women's Highlights
In the mile, senior Kaitlyn Galgon set a new personal best with a time of 5:13.70. The time pushes her into the UW-Platteville top 10 list in the mile.
Sophomore Hannah Fliss ran an impressive time of 19:26.86 to finish fourth in the 5000m. Her time is a new lifetime best in the event, breaking her previous top time set last outdoor season.
Senior Ashleigh Adamson set a pair of new PRs in the 60m and 200m. She ran an 8.29 in the 60m and also took 10th in the 200m at 27.17.
In the field events, sophomore Shannon Wulf took sixth in the long jump with a leap of 4.68m. Three Pioneers scored in the pole vault, with junior Autumn Montgomery placing fifth at 2.81m. Freshmen Hayley Wuebben and Emma Egnoski claimed the next two spots in the event. Senior Kelli Schneider finished fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 10.61m.
Sophomore Brenna Noon won the shot put with a great final throw of 13.31m. Senior Paulina Wienke continued to make a push towards the school record as she posted another PR in the weight throw at 16.58m. She also scored in the shot put with a seventh-place finish at 12.11m.
Senior Grace Elvert finished sixth in the pentathlon with 2779 points. She won the pentathlon high jump with a mark of 1.53m.
The Pioneers will host the UW-Platteville Invitational on Saturday, February 11. The meet is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
