Pioneers take second at MSOE Invite

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville wrestling team took second place out of 15 teams on Saturday at the MSOE Invite. 

Eight wrestlers placed with three Pioneers finishing third in their weight class, two placing fourth and three placing sixth. 

Freshman Aiden Brosinski finished the day victorious in the 157 pounds third place match. Brosinski pinned his first two opponents in 1:26 and 1:55 to advance to the semifinal. The Pioneer suffered a setback when the No. 2 ranked Tyler Shilson of Augsburg won by fall (5:52). Brosinski bounced back and pinned teammate Curtis Brock (1:56) in the consolation semifinal and then won the third place bout by 7-4 decision over Blake Jagodzinske of Augsburg. 

No. 8 ranked sophomore Tyler Hannah finished third at 197 pounds and recorded two pins and one major decision on the day. After a bye, Hannah advanced to the quarterfinal by a 10-0 major. The Pioneer then pinned UW-Oshkosh's Dakota Treleven (3:59). Hannah dropped the next bout by 6-1 decision in favor of Augsburg's Parker Venz, but advanced to the third place match by a 2-0 decision over UW-Eau Claire's Sam Melton. Hannah won the final bout by pinning Treleven again (3:49). 

No. 14 ranked senior Brett Schoenherr also finished third. The Pioneer opened wrestling with a pin (3:52) and then a 10-2 major decision against the host school's Noah Nieberle. Schoenherr was bested in the semifinals by No. 3 ranked Tyler Kim of Augsburg, but after the 5-1 loss, the Pioneer advanced to the third place bout with a 3-1 win in overtime. Schoenherr defeated Aurora's Cam'ron Harper with a 16-0 tech. fall to take home third place. 

Freshman Maddux Blakely took home fourth place at 141 pounds by pinning two opponents and defeating another by 5-1 decision. 

Freshman Kasey Ross found success on the day with a fourth place finish at 184 pounds. Ross suffered just two losses at the start and finish, both to Evan Danowski of UW-Whitewater. The Pioneer defeated Alton Mullinax of Aurora by 10-1 major decision and then defeated the next by 5-0 decision. Ross pinned his next opponent (1:30) and finally advanced to the third place bout with a 4-2 win in overtime. 

Freshman Kyler Neuberger placed sixth at 149 pounds and stacked up three major decision while pinning another opponent. Junior Curtis Brock finished sixth at 157 pounds and shutout two opponents by a combined 31-0 before defeating UW-Whitewater's Hunter Rudzinski 9-5. Freshman Wyatt Ripp at 285 pounds rounds out the six-place finishers. Ripp defeated one opponent 4-1 and the next 4-3 before winning the next bout by medical forfeit.
